"New Purchase: Rating is for Setup, Included Items & Print Quality" 2009-09-29

I just bought this printer tonight, so this is based on first impressions.

Installation was a snap. There were LOTS of extra packing materials. The printer is BIG.

Including the Mac drivers on the disk was a nice touch. Including FULL toner cartridges - not the half-baked starter cartridges some companies include - was an impressively customer-serving thing for them to have done (for the record, the list price for the black cartridge alone is $106.01) Leaving out the network and USB cables... I would have been happier if they'd included them, but since the four toner cartridges which run $60-90 apiece were included, who cares about the $5 USB cable? I had one from my old printer.

This is a network/USB printer. It does not have wireless networking capabilities built in. That said, getting it to work on my wireless network through an Apple Airport Express base station was as simple as plugging it into the AirPort Express and telling the laptop (running 10.6) to look for it. The desktop (10.5) needed a driver first, but I found it on the included disk and had it installed in no time.

In use, the printer takes about a minute to warm up. After that it appears to shoot through printing at the advertised 21 PPM speed.

Color fidelity and text crispness appear to be excellent. The built-in duplexer is very effective.

Based on my experience so far and on the reputation of Brother printers as a highly reliable machines, I'd definitely recommend it to someone in the market for a heavy-use home or small office printer.

 "NOT a network printer" 2009-09-25
By Rodney G. Turnham
Please be forewarned: this is NOT a network-enabled printer! The manufacturer claims that it is, but it is totally unusable when connected directly to a router. Neither my Vista nor my XP computers could print ANYTHING to it connected in this manner. I requested help from Brother for this, but received no response.

As a USB-connected printer, however, it is excellent. Print quality is excellent, and print speed (after initial start-up) is very fast. Toner cartridges supplied are the standard-yield units, NOT low-yield starter cartridges. If you don't need direct network connectivity, it is a good choice.

"Best printer for price, quality and usablity" 2009-09-18

This Brother Color printer HL-4040CDN is definitely worth it's price. The built quality and setup is very easy and the toners are really big so I hope not to spend too much on toners for colors. It replaced my often problematic HP color printer.

Pros:

- Features for printing (vivid, normal), Mono, Color, duplex, network and more.

- Price per page on color printing

- Easy Setup

- Ease of usage

Cons:

- Weight of printer

- footprint is enormous

- The 64MB initial memory was not enough memory, I had to purchase another 512MB to be able to even apply the Brother patch firmware. So consider to spend another $50 or so for memory.

Overall, I see this printer to last a very long time. I did research others like Lexmark, HP (CP2025CDN.. toners were super small and toner cost is way to expensive), Samsung (really good on price but questionable on reliability).

I don't recommend wireless network since the signal maybe weak and you can't print. Ethernet networking for printer is better.

"Brother envelope issues; this helped!" 2009-09-08
By Double Up (Birmingham, AL)
I purchased the Brother HL-4040CDN in June 09, after reading all the reviews I could find. Some people mentioned a problem printing envelopes but I thought that was just a random problem;but soon found that every envelope I printed was creased and wrinkled. I tried every Printer Properties option - envelope type, paper type, thicker paper, etc. I researched all the Brother website troubleshooting help for printer, paper feeding and envelope issues, and tried it all. Nothing worked. Then, I went to Solution Center, FAQs: "envelopes wrinkle and crease" I found this one thing that helped tremendously. Very insignificantly listed as the last option: Open the back door of the printer and move the Envelope levers down, these are two grey levers next to the green levers on the fuser unit. Make sure to leave the grey levers down for envelope printing only. When done printing envelopes return the grey lever to the original position or UP position for use with regular paper.

It is very inconvenient to open the back door and move the grey levers every time I need to print an envelope, so I have found that leaving the grey levers down has not caused a problem printing on paper.

Hope this helps someone. It sure helped me, and would have saved me lots of time and envelopes.
